Toyota Asian American Deep Dive
Toyota Asian American Deep Dive
Agency: Intertrend Communications x Toyota, FY24
Type: Strategic Research Report
What It Was: Asian Americans were once Toyota loyalists. But loyalty doesn’t mean what it used to, not in a world where luxury blends into mainstream and first-time EV buyers have more options than questions.
The category was shifting, and Toyota risked being seen as... dependable, and nothing else. That wasn’t good enough. We needed to figure out what desire looks like now, and how Toyota could earn its place again so we proposed a plan to find the gaps and rebuild relevance.
Insight Snapshot
Asian Americans weren’t opting out of Toyota but were evolving past it.
Luxury and practicality weren’t at odds anymore. They were being redefined by first-gen parents, second-gen kids, and a shifting center of gravity where confidence wasn’t loud, but it was real.
Strategic Findings
Luxury is coded. To some, it’s Toyota’s value. To others, it’s safety, quiet, and less drama.
The decision loop isn’t linear. Parents influence. Kids research. Trust is earned twice.
Being first doesn’t matter. Being right does. In a sea of sleek EVs, reliability and humility still land when paired with cultural relevance.
Cultural fluency beats personalization. Ads can’t just feature “faces.” They need to reflect truths.
What I Did
I helped kick this off by writing the research proposal and asking the questions we didn’t always have clear answers to. What does luxury mean when QDRS is expected? What image are buyers really drawn to, and does Toyota still fit it? How do sub-brands like GR and Trucks shape perception? Where does Beyond Zero stand in a sea of EV noise?
From there, I stayed close, helping synthesize primary and secondary data into human truths and making sure those truths led somewhere useful: insights that could drive creative, sharpen brand thinking, and actually move the brand forward.
Final Word
Toyota didn’t need a new audience. It needed to see the old one more clearly.
This deep dive gave them the tools to show up not as the safe pick, but as the brand that actually gets it.
